Cyanocapture JumpstartS ITS Data Journey with Rittman Analytics and Looker

CyanoCapture is developing a groundbreaking solution to fight climate change by improving nature's own carbon-absorbing process in tiny organisms. Winners of the Elon Musk Foundation XPRIZE in 2021, CyanoCapture has created special bacteria that can capture carbon dioxide faster than ever before and turn it into valuable products for industry.

This innovative approach helps clean up emissions from factories and power plants while also making useful materials. By making carbon capture profitable, CyanoCapture is creating a win-win solution for both the environment and businesses.

To support and enable growth in their business, CyanoCapture now had a need for a scalable business intelligence (BI) solution that would enable them to monitor system health, analyse operational data and communicate results to both internal stakeholders and external investors. 

THE CHALLENGE

While CyanoCapture's technical team was comfortable working with raw data and command-line tools for their own ad-hoc analysis, they needed a more interactive, intuitive and accessible approach for the wider sharing of results and insights with stakeholders and investors.

The company operates a suite of IoT devices that track system inputs, processes, and outputs, generating data every few seconds. This high-frequency data, combined with their need to forecast profitability in the carbon credit market, presented both technical and architectural challenges. The tools that they were familiar with were soon going to run into scalability issues & enriching with third party data was difficult.

CyanoCapture has identified Looker as their preferred platform based on its innovative and powerful universal semantic layer and the self-service, low-latency access it provides to CyanoCapture’s detailed, granular IoT data stored in detailed, granular form in Google BigQuery and Google Cloud.

JUMPSTART SOLUTION

Rittman Analytics delivered our Looker Jumpstart Embed consulting package over four weeks, with an objective of getting CyanoCapture up-and-running with Looker and their first embedded use-case successfully-delivered.

• Co-Development and Training: We worked closely with CyanoCapture's technical developers and business users through a series of co-development sessions. These included targeted, hands-on training covering everything they needed to get up to get their real-time data visualised in Looker—from platform configuration to LookML development, and visualisations to alerting. 

• SME Support: Throughout the engagement, CyanoCapture had access to one of our Looker experts to support their team, demonstrating advanced features of the platform and rapidly accelerating their confidence and ability to implement those and other features.

Data Architecture and Schema Design: Cyanocapture also needed help designing the architecture and schema of the data ingestion pipeline. Using some of the available independent development time, we advised on the use of additional GCP services suitable to their IoT data needs and designed a suitable Google BigQuery schema that met their immediate needs and would scale with future plant expansion.

BENEFITS DELIVERED

By the end of the Looker Jumpstart engagement, the team had produced a stunning set of dashboards that displayed key information about their plant’s performance, operational status and economic outlook. CyanoCapture’s team has also developed a strong understanding of the Looker platform and has the structure in place to grow and scale their BI capability.

The team proudly showcased their new data platform at a major climate-tech festival, highlighting its role in advancing their mission of carbon capture innovation.
